Hochevar Reportedly Signs With Royals

The Kansas City Royals have reportedly reached an agreement with Luke Hochevar to bring the reliever back into the fold on a two-year, $10 million deal.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports the 31-year-old right-hander is expected back at some point during spring training after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. It's a sign Kansas City is doubling down on one of the areas that helped it reach the World Series:

"

The Royals, who rode an all-time great bullpen all the way to the World Series, are enhancing that strength by re-signing free agent righthander Luke Hochevar, who missed the 2014 season after a brilliant 2013 campaign.

Hochevar has agreed to a $10-million, two-year deal with Kansas City, according to sources.

"

Hochevar endured an unsuccessful five-year stretch as a starting pitcher. The Royals decided to move him to the bullpen in 2013, and the switch worked wonders. He posted a 1.82 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP with 82 strikeouts in 70.1 innings of relief.

Obviously, the deal comes with some risk as he returns from injury, but the value of shutdown relievers is on the rise—something the Royals understand after last season. Hochevar has the ability to make a major impact once back to full strength.

At that point, he'll join an impressive group that already includes Greg Holland, Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera.
