Rondo Records Unusual Double-Double with Only 2 Points
Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo recorded an unusual double-double Tuesday, finishing with two points, 19 assists and 12 rebounds in a 109-105 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Despite the lofty assist total, it was far from a perfect night for the four-time All-Star, as he committed a game-high seven turnovers while making just one of his eight field-goal attempts.
Rondo helped the Celtics to a 42-30 lead at the end of the first quarter, followed by a 66-50 lead at halftime, only to watch the Hawks storm back in the second half behind 24 points from shooting guard Kyle Korver.
According to Basketball-Reference.com's play index, Rondo is the only player going back to at least 1985-86 to record two or fewer points, 19 or more assists and 12 or more rebounds in a single regular-season game.
There have been 11 double-doubles in which the player scored exactly two points, but none with just one or zero points. Jason Kidd and Darrell Walker each accounted for two of those games, while no other player has been responsible for more than one.
It's not exactly shocking that Rondo joined this group, given that he's averaging 8.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and an NBA-high 11.1 assists for the season.
