Online Daters in Kentucky Use the Word 'Basketball' to Find Love

Dan CarsonDec 2, 2014

In a whimsical bit of data-mining, Mashable.com reached out to the online dating service Match.com and asked for a state-by-state breakdown of the most popular word listed in usersโ€™ profiles.

The results were mostly outdoorsy phrases. โ€œKayak,โ€ โ€œsnowboardingโ€ and โ€œhuntingโ€ were popular terms in many states, but buried in the pile of summer camp phraseology were a couple of gems that stood out from the rest.

First off is โ€œbasketball,โ€ which Match.com listed as the most popular word employed by users in Kentucky.ย

Obviously, college hoops is next to godliness in the Bluegrass State, where Kentucky Wildcats basketball is as necessary as the sun for the continuation of life.

Another fun phrase from Match.comโ€™s research is found just north of Kentucky in Indiana, where users use the word โ€œNASCARโ€ most frequently in their online dating profiles.ย

Basketball and NASCAR, people. They're a way of life.

Granted, none of these terms match Mississippiโ€™s contribution to online dating. It cut right to the chase with its most popular word.ย

Online daters like their โ€œlookinโ€ in Mississippi, and thereโ€™s nothing you can do to stop it. Theyโ€™re going to look at you all day.
