The 29-year-old athlete was arrested in late September on a DUI charge, which was the second such offense on his record, per ESPN.com.

After the incident, Phelps tweeted that he regretted his actions and said that he would seek help in order to ensure that nothing similar would happen in the future:

Following the arrest, USA Swimming suspended Phelps for six months, according to ESPN.com, which put a damper on his comeback bid as he prepares for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Even though Phelps is still in the midst of his suspension, he was recently given a major USA Swimming honor, per Universal Sports:

He has also returned to training in anticipation of his suspension's conclusion, according to Nick Zaccardi of NBC OlympicTalk.

"Michael is in Baltimore, happily back in the pool, working toward his goals for next year," said North Baltimore Aquatic Club Director of Athlete Services Keenan Robinson.

Phelps obviously has a long way to go in terms of overcoming his demons and returning to form as an elite swimmer prior to the 2016 Summer Games.

He seems committed to bettering himself, though, which is a positive sign considering his recent struggles.
