Danny Welbeck Injury: Updates on Arsenal Star's Knee and Return

Tom SunderlandNov 28, 2014

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck faces a fight to be fit for Saturday's clash against West Brom after Arsene Wenger revealed his summer signing is struggling with a knee injury.

Welbeck missed the midweek win over Borussia Dortmund and will undergo a late fitness test before a decision is made on his involvement in Saturday's early kick-off.

According to Arsenal's official Twitter account, Arsene Wenger said in Friday's pre-match press conference:

Should the forward be unable to recover in time, the manager has a dilemma up front once again, with Yaya Sanogo—who opened the scoring in Wednesday's 2-0 victory—also a doubt for this weekend.

Olivier Giroud made an earlier-than-expected return from injury against Manchester United last Saturday, but it may be too soon to hand the Frenchman starting responsibilities just yet, per ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery:

The obvious candidate to fill the void up top would be Alexis Sanchez, who already sits as the club's leading scorer in his maiden Premier League campaign with eight goals to his name.

Arsenal travel to the Hawthorns with a view to reversing their recent domestic form, losing back-to-back Premier League games against United and Swansea City.

Pending other results, a win at the Hawthorns would push the Gunners back into the top four, but Welbeck's absence could hurt a side that has won only two of its six away games in the league this season.
