Tottenham's Stambouli Says Team Are Good Enough to Win the Premier League

Sean FayNov 27, 2014

Tottenham signed Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier for £4.7 million in the summer, but he has only played 20 minutes in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino might want to consider moving the midfielder into the lineup, though—if for no other reason than his immense optimism.

Most Tottenham fans would dream of just getting back in the Champions League, but Stambouli says the club should be aiming higher, claiming they have sufficient talent in the squad to win the title.

He told the Evening Standard

"

We can do it, maybe not now but in the future. We have talent in the squad. We have some players who have all the mental and technical qualities but now we have to think what we really want.

Do we want to just play every game, or do we really want to finish third, second or first? Maybe you won’t be able to do it, but we have to believe. We have to believe more. We have to be more confident.

"

It obviously sounds completely fanciful. Tottenham are currently 11th in the Premier League table and are 15 points behind leaders Chelsea after just 12 games of the season.

Still, Stambouli has form when it comes to upsetting the odds. He helped Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title in 2012 despite the club having a much lower budget than their rivals.

"

Montpellier were a very small club. Tottenham are maybe not Manchester City or Chelsea if you see the money, but Montpellier were very small.

That year we beat PSG, Monaco, Marseille, so we showed people if you have a minimum of talent, a very good mentality, if you are friends on the pitch and you can die for your team-mates.
