The Phoenix Suns Secure 2 More Years Of Not Contending
I feel like I’m pointing out the obvious here, but what the hell. Typically, it’s not simple to argue against a 2 time MVP, but in this case it is. Steve Nash is overrated, and let’s be real: he only deserved one of those MVP awards.
Nash recently signed a 2 year extension worth roughly $22 million that will keep him in a Phoenix Suns jersey to the age of 38. I wouldn’t necessarily say he isn’t worth the money, but I guess that depends on Phoenix’s intentions. If they plan on contending, Nash isn’t the right guy and he probably isn’t worth the cash. If the Suns organization is looking to fill some seats and entertain with their run-and-gun style of play, he is worth every penny.
The decision to extend the PG’s contract had to have been based on the fact that he is a crowd pleaser. Steve Nash sells tickets. People like watching him play, and rightfully so. He drops some nice dimes and is great at finding/getting his players open. These are great qualities, but he remains far from a great player.
How he has 2 MVP awards is beyond me. Nash’s stats would be nowhere near what they have been with the Suns if he was elsewhere (besides maybe Golden State). Did he really deserve MVP in the 05-06 season? No way! Just because he led the league in assists (10.5) to go along with good point, FG and FT percentages doesn’t mean he deserved the MVP. You have to take into account the kind of system he is in, and the players he won the MVP award over. Phoenix is known for their up-tempo style of basketball. Nash’s numbers wouldn’t be close to what they have been if he was in a place like San Antonio for example. Additionally, he is not the best defender.
Nash has yet to win a championship and probably never will. If he does, it certainly won’t be in Phoenix. He is a good point guard, but he is far from great. Steve Nash is 35 years old at the moment, and I highly doubt he will make the leap from good to great in his remaining years. [Sports news you can drink a beer to - Bareknucks.com]
