Despite that, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports it wasn't Ryan who made the final decision:

Mehta noted that overruling Ryan's choice is becoming common for the Jets:

Jane McManus of ESPN New York provided further analysis:

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report weighed in on the situation in New York:

Regardless of who made the call, it doesn't come as a surprise. The Jets got throttled by the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Vick completed just seven of 19 passes in that game before Smith took over. Smith proceeded to connect on 10 of his 12 throws.

That said, it's really about the bigger picture. New York is 2-9 and going nowhere fast. It needs to get another look at Smith to see if he can make any progress before the team heads into the offseason. The future at quarterback will be one of the team's major question marks.

It appears Smith will get a final five-game audition to make his case starting Monday night.
