Organisers of Legends Match Try to Pass Off Guy in Headband as Claudio Caniggia

Sean FayNov 24, 2014

This weekend, Brazil took on Argentina in a legends match in Natal, and one of the star attractions was former Argentine World Cup star Claudio Caniggia.

Caniggia helped Argentina reach the 1990 World Cup final, scoring the winner against Brazil in the second round off a pass from Diego Maradona, and he also played in USA 1994.

However, the organisers were left with a problem when Caniggia failed to turn up for last weekend's event.

Their solution was an interesting one to say the least:

The ringer in question is a former footballer himself but not quite of the same calibre as Caniggia.

As per the Sunderland Echo:

"

Former Newcastle United flop Daniel Cordone made an unlikely return to football at the weekend – by impersonating Argentina legend Claudio Caniggia.

However, spectators quickly realised that the former Rangers striker was not there at all, despite being included in the team list.

In fact, Cordone was playing instead, complete with a band in his hair in a bid to look like Caniggia.

"

Despite being rumbled, the organisers amazingly are still insisting it was actually Caniggia who played in the game.

“This is the Caniggia, the real Caniggia. There is no other Caniggia,” said the event’s promoter, Andre de Paula.

Unsurprisingly the "Caniggia" on show did not conduct any interviews after the match.

For the record, the match finished in a 3-3 draw.
