Zac Jackson of Fox Sports Ohio reports Cribbs originally worked out with the team last week and is now set to join the squad:
"The Indianapolis Colts plan to sign veteran return specialist Joshua Cribbs, two sources with knowledge of the process told FOX Sports Ohio.
Cribbs, 31, flew to Indianapolis and worked out for the team last week but left without a contract. The Colts have not yet confirmed the signing.
"
At his peak, Cribbs, 31, was an extremely valuable asset. His ability to impact a game on special teams with 11 career return touchdowns (eight kickoffs, three punts) was key for a Cleveland Browns team that lacked explosiveness of offense.
The change in kickoff rules, which limits the impact of the return game, and his diminishing returns (no TDs since 2011) has led to fewer chances for Cribbs, though. He played just six games with the New York Jets last season and is just now getting his first opportunity of 2014.
Indianapolis, which ranks 23rd in punt return average, is clearly hoping to catch lightning in a bottle for the rest of the regular season and a potentially deep playoff run.
