NFL Reinstates Josh Gordon

As expected, the NFL officially reinstated Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon on Monday, clearing him to participate in all team activities.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted Gordon will not have any restrictions:

Gordon addressed his reinstatement via his Twitter account:

Mike Pettine spoke about having the talented wide reciever back with the team, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Albert Breer of NFL.com and Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan:

Brian Hoyer also spoke about Gordon's return on Monday, via Cabot:

"

'We all know what Josh is capable of, but let's not put all this pressure on him to be the savior,'' said Hoyer. 'We all have to be better on offense. We all have to be more consistent.

'We don't want to create these crazy expectations for Josh. He's got six games to play. He hasn't been doing anything physically with us in 10 weeks. That's tough. Imagine having a whole offseason and then coming back and playing. Obviously we all know how talented he is physically and I think he'll pick up everything because he's been in meetings and stuff, but I also think we have to bring him along where he's at this own pace and does it the way he's going to do it.

'Our coaches have a good plan for that and we'll see how it is when this week rolls around.'

"

Gordon, 23, was suspended for the first 10 games of the 2014 NFL season after violating the league's substance abuse policy. The All-Pro wideout tested above the NFL's threshold for marijuana and was initially suspended for the entire 2014 season, but alterations to the league's drug-testing policy reduced the penalty to 10 games. Gordon was previously kicked off the team at Baylor after failing multiple drug tests and was suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Despite missing those two games, Gordon emerged as perhaps the NFL's best receiver last season. He led the league with 1,646 yards on 87 receptions and scored nine touchdowns. He became the first player in league history with consecutive 200-yard receiving games and broke the record for the most yards in a four-game span (774).

Following the Browns' Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans, Field Yates of ESPN noted how Gordon's return was a positive for a team looking to crack the postseason:

While no one should doubt his talent, Gordon could have a tough time being immediately effective. He was barred from practicing with teammates during the suspension and hasn't played meaningful football since the preseason. Albert Breer of NFL Network noted that Gordon was limited to strength and conditioning only for the first 11 weeks:

The Browns' coaching staff has also worked on couching expectations of an immediate breakout.

“This is a player that’s missed ... it’s probably around 75 to 80 days and 10 games and a preseason game,” Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters. “It’s a significant amount of time not having contact and being apart. I just don’t know if you walk back in and are able to be functional.”

The 6-4 Browns, who lost 23-7 to Houston on Sunday, play the Falcons in Atlanta this week. Gordon is expected to play, though it's unclear how many snaps he'll receive.
