Roger Federer Injury: Updates on Tennis Star's Back and Recovery

Fans pining for a Roger Federer vs. Novak Djokovic showdown at the ATP World Tour Finals were left disappointed Sunday, as the Swiss star had to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury.

According to Nick Atkin of ESPN.co.uk, Federer was dealing with a back injury he aggravated during his semifinal match against Stan Wawrinka.    

Federer directly addressed the fans with a message regarding his injury, per BBC Tennis:

The tennis great also posted his health status on Facebook:

Christopher Clarey of The New York Times weighed in on the announcement:

That's probably the easiest title Djokovic will ever win. The Djoker had already wrapped up the No. 1 ranking for the year, however, so the stakes weren't terribly high going in outside of it being a premier matchup between two of the top players in the game.

Now, we'll have to wait until next year to see these two men do battle again. One would imagine it won't take long before they're pitted against each other in a top tournament.
