49ers vs. Giants: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season

R. Cory SmithNov 16, 2014

Attempting to climb back up in the NFC West division, the San Francisco 49ers earned a critical win over the New York Giants in Week 11, 16-10. The 49ers move to 6-4 while the Giants fall to a woeful 3-7 and the cellar of the NFC East.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh spoke about the huge victory, per the team's official account:

San Francisco got the job done behind a huge performance from its defense. The Niners forced five interceptions from Eli Manning and allowed just three points in the final three quarters.

None of those turnovers was bigger than the final one to essentially clinch the game. Rookie linebacker Chris Borland came away with his second interception to stop a huge drive by the Giants, as San Francisco notes:

Borland, who has shined in Patrick Willis' absence, also received the game ball following the game, via the Niners:

Colin Kaepernick points out the impact Borland has had on the defense, per Taylor Price of 49ers.com:

The Niners quarterback was held mostly in check throughout the day, but finished with 193 passing yards, 24 rushing yards and one passing touchdown. Manning finished with 280 passing yards and one touchdown to go along with his five interceptions.

Kaepernick's leading receiver was Michael Crabtree, who tallied three receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Crabtree had a huge impact on third downs as well, per Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee:

The day started off well for the Giants, as Larry Donnell made a huge touchdown catch to open the scoring. It was the first touchdown on the opening drive all season for New York, but it would also be its last of the afternoon.

Dan Graziano of ESPN and Pete Damilatis of Pro Football Focus provided their take on Donnell's catch:

Rueben Randle and Odell Beckham Jr. also had good days with 205 combined receiving yards, but neither could make up for the woeful day from Manning. Rashad Jennings posted 59 yards on 18 carries in his return to the lineup.

Outside of Donnell, there wasn't much early scoring by either team. In fact, the catch marked the only touchdown in the first half, with Phil Dawson's leg giving the 49ers a lead heading into the locker rooms.

Dawson had three field goals through the first two quarters to earn a 9-7 lead at the half. Price noted Dawson's impact on the team to that point:

Crabtree's 48-yard reception would mark the only other touchdown for either team, as both struggled at times on offense throughout the day.

One of the biggest storylines coming into the game was the return of Aldon Smith and his impact on the team. Smith wasn't exactly a game-changer with just two quarterback hits on the day, but his presence on the field should help down the stretch.

Smith spoke about what it meant to return to the team prior to the matchup, per NFL Network:

Moving forward, the Niners return home looking to continue moving up in the NFC West. Awaiting them is yet another NFC East opponent in the Washington Redskins. If San Francisco can knock off Washington, it will complete a season sweep of the division.

New York now prepares for a Sunday Night Football showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. At 3-7 and well outside of the playoff picture, the Giants can play spoiler against Dallas after losing earlier this season.
