" CAN YOU SEE ME NOW "

mattJul 29, 2009

Yes its true Brock Lesnar’s MMA career has been a short road, but

what fans forget to credit him with is his amazing trek as an athlete.

From a State Champ in high school, to multiple titles in the NJCAA ,

and NCAA , and finally sitting atop the UFC’s Heavyweight tier. He

might not be the type of person fans want as the UFC Champ, but oh

well he is! Lesnar has fought hard for everything he has and prides

himself on being the ultimate athlete. His actions after his devastating

win over Frank Mir might not have won him over any more fans, but

come on now you can’t relate? After so much animosity from both

sides I’m surprised he didn’t choke Mir with that famous

horseshoe!!!!!!  Even though seeing  Mir’s face afterwards was just as

good.

Webster High School was were Lesnar got his first taste of blood so to

speak. Finishing his senior year at an astonishing 33-0 and a 2x South

Dakota State Wrestling Champion. Soon after Lesnar made his way to

University Of Minnesota walking away as the 2000 NCAA wrestling

champ, 2nd place in '99, 2x NJCAA All American, 1998 NJCAA HW

champion, 2x NCAA All American, and 2x Big Ten Conference

Champion. Along with many other titles such as North Dakota’s State

University’s Annual Bison Tournament Heavyweight Champion from

1997-1999.

And no I’m not even going to mention his career as a pro wrestler,

because I can just imagine the comments now. ( ha ha ) Soon after

leaving the WWE Brock gave up the “squared circle” and began his

short career as a Minnesota Viking.  Even though he was a late cut in

the preseason he made his presence known loud and clear, starting

minor fights and even leveling quarterback Damon Huard for his first

sack.

"He has actually progressed quicker than we actually thought he

would," Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "You know, he's still lost a

little bit at times, but he's certainly not going to back down from

anybody. He's going to give extreme effort."

On April 28, 2006, Lesnar appeared inside the ring after the final

match of K-1 Hero's Las Vegas and announced his intent to join the

MMA promotion. His first fight was scheduled for June 2, 2007 on

the K-1 Dynamite against Min Soo Kim. Lesnar submitted Min Soo

Kim due to strikes in under 1 minute 8 seconds of the first round to

win his first ever MMA bout. In his second fight against Frank Mir at

UFC 81 Brock ran right over the underestimating Mir, but being a new

comer to the sport got caught because a simple mistake. But he

refused to listen to the boos and hackling, he got back in the octagon

again against the “The Texas Crazy Horse” Heath Herring. This was to

be his night to shut everyone up. Landing “The Hit Heard Around The

World”, and the win by unanimous decision. “Can You Hear Me Now“ bellowed from the

265 lb future champion. But the hackling

continued. We all know what happened next, earning a 2nd round TKO

against the then Heavyweight Champ Randy Couture at UFC 91. With

the belt around his waist and a smirk on his face Lesnar prepared for

his title defense against the man who thought he was going to end

Lesnar’s  MMA career before it got off the ground, Las Vegas’ own

Frank Mir. After over a year of flap jawing the two meet up again at

UFC 100. It pretty much was a repeat of the couture/lesnar fight at

UFC 91, with Brock walking away with a 2nd round TKO. After the

fight Lesnar wasn’t done, humiliating Mir was his idea of putting the

last nail in the coffin. After he had harassed Mir he turned his

aggression and his “birds” to the angry crowd. He later apologized for

his actions at the post fight interview.

I know with all the skeptics in the world there will always be fans of

MMA  that’ll despise Brock Lesnar , but don’t take away the fact that

the man is a true athlete and the UFC Heavyweight Champion. If it

was a fluke for him to beat Couture , Herring ,and Mir then he is either

the luckiest man ever or he actually has the wrestling talent and the

ground & pound to put just about anyone away. Like I said “just about

anyone” !!  Who’s next is my question …will it be Fedor , Kongo , or

Cain Velasquez.
