Ryan Tannehill, Charles Clay's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 11

Matt FitzgeraldNov 13, 2014

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill's egalitarian ball distribution kept the Buffalo Bills' vaunted defense off balance often enough for a strong fantasy outing on Thursday. Tannehill led the Dolphins to a huge 22-9 victory, giving Miami key leverage in the AFC East.

Tight end Charles Clay, a talented pass-catcher, was proficient in a healthy helping of six targets, but he didn't produce big plays to bolster his fantasy point total.

Clay has been an inconsistent fantasy producer who's underwhelmed after a stellar 2013 campaign in which he caught 69 passes and six touchdowns. That makes him a flex option at best, and there are many superior TE1 options to deploy.

NFL Philosophy's Joe Bussell highlighted how valuable Clay has been for Miami's top-flight rushing attack:

As for Tannehill, he continues to show signs of encouraging progress, also using his mobility Thursday to rack up 16 rushing yards on four carries. That athleticism also helped him get outside the pocket and hit Brandon Gibson on a seven-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.

ESPN Stats & Info noted how effective Tannehill was on shorter passes, which is nice for high completion rates but not necessarily so for explosive plays:

With Gibson, Mike Wallace, rookie Jarvis Landry and Brian Hartline, Tannehill has plenty of weapons at his disposal to keep up his promising progress for the remainder of the year.

Thanks to his increased tendency to run, too, Tannehill is a borderline QB1 and definitely worth starting no matter the matchup in two-QB fantasy formats. If and when Tannehill takes more shots deep and is successful, he may be on his way to becoming a more consistent No. 1 fantasy play.
