Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers: Betting Odds, Analysis, NFL Pick

OddsShark.comNov 12, 2014

The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers are each coming off blowout wins at home in prime time last week and will meet at Lambeau Field Sunday in a key NFC matchup between potential playoff teams. The Eagles are coming off a 45-21 rout of the Carolina Panthers as seven-point favorites on Monday Night Football, while the Packers crushed the Chicago Bears 55-14 as nine-point chalk on Sunday night.

Point spread: The Packers opened as 4.5-point favorites; the total was 54 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)

Why the Eagles can cover the spread

Philadelphia has been an outstanding road team under second-year head coach Chip Kelly, going 7-3 straight up and against the spread in its last 10 games away from home. The Eagles already own road wins against the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans this season, and they are 3-1 ATS in their past four as road dogs.

Green Bay will get its first look at Kelly's offense, which will be a lot different than what the team saw in a very familiar divisional foe last week. Philly had to like what it saw from quarterback Mark Sanchez, who threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns in his first start with the team, as well. The Pack will not have much tape of him to study in this offense.

Why the Packers can cover the spread

Green Bay did most of its damage in the first half of last week's demolition of the Bears, building a 42-0 halftime lead and then cruising after the intermission while giving several players some valuable game experience.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tied an NFL record with six touchdown passes in the first two quarters and finished with 315 yards, and he will test a Philadelphia secondary that faced a far less accurate passer last week in Carolina's Cam Newton.

The Pack has won three of the last four meetings with the Eagles both SU and ATS, and they are also 3-0 versus the line in their past three games as a home favorite.

Smart Pick

This game will be a much bigger challenge for both teams defensively, and the Matthews brothers may just help decide who wins it from their linebacker spots.

Green Bay's Clay Matthews turned in an impressive performance in his first game at the inside linebacker position against Chicago, registering a game-high 11 tackles to go along with one sack.

Philadelphia's Casey Matthews started for the injured DeMeco Ryans against the Panthers and totaled seven tackles. However, he is not nearly as good as his older brother and will struggle trying to stop Packers running back Eddie Lacy up the middle.

If Clay handles the Philly running game like he did the Bears, the Eagles will be in big trouble, and Sanchez will be scrambling for his life. Green Bay wins by double digits.

Betting Trends

  • Philadelphia is 4-1 ATS in its last five games when playing on the road against Green Bay.
  • Green Bay is 3-5-2 ATS in its last 10 games at home.
