UNC Basketball: Latest Buzz on Tar Heels' Targets in Early Signing Period

Brian PedersenNov 10, 2014

North Carolina is set to begin its 2014-15 season on Friday, during which it will debut a trio of prized recruits who signed around this time a year ago.

We likely won't be saying the same thing next November, because as it stands now, the Tar Heels didn't receive their first 2015 commitment until Tuesday, the day before the start of the early signing period. Luke Maye, a 3-star forward from Cornelius, North Carolina, confirmed his pledge to Evan Daniels of Scout.com.

UNC's coaches have been on the recruiting trail throughout the offseason keeping tabs on numerousother  targets, though whether the Tar Heels will get any to sign a national letter of intent during the period between Wednesday and Nov. 19 remains to be seen.

To give you an idea of whom the Heels are interested in, here's the latest buzz on their most notable targets heading into a week of televised commitments and high-profile signings.

Perry Dozier

Position: Shooting guard

Height, weight: 6'6", 180 lbs

247Sports ranking: 26th

Since late September, Perry Dozier has spent most of his weekends visiting his top schools to help narrow down where he plans to play in 2015. After making stops at Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina and South Carolina, he's decided he knows where he wants to spend his college days.

The Columbia, South Carolina-based shooter plans to make his commitment known on Wednesday—the first day of the early signing period—according to Evan Daniels of Scout.com. The announcement will come at his alma mater, Spring Valley High School.

Dozier visited UNC on Oct. 4, the second of his five stops. He's trending toward a commitment to Louisville, according to 247Sports.

Brandon Ingram

Position: Small forward

Height, weight: 6'8", 180 lbs

247Sports ranking: 18th

The top-rated player in the state of North Carolina is a major target for three in-state schools, with UNC, Duke and North Carolina State making Brandon Ingram's final list of six choices.

Yet it's been the out-of-state suitors (Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA) that Ingram has made official visits to this point.

Ingram has been on coach Roy Williams' radar for quite some time, according to John Bauman of FanSided.com, noting that Williams showed up at Ingram's home just after midnight on the first day he was allowed to make one-on-one contact with the recruit.

UNC has a 32 percent chance of landing the wing player, according to 247Sports, with only Duke (at 55 percent) having a better shot.

Skal Labissiere

3 of 4

Position: Power forward

Height, weight: 6'10", 200 lbs

247Sports ranking: 7th

Skal Labissiere has had an eventful past few weeks, first announcing in late October he would be playing his final season of high school basketball for a school that doesn't currently exist and then indicating he would announce his college commitment on Thursday on ESPNU.

Labissiere, from Memphis, announced via Twitter last month he would play for Reach Your Dreams Prep, which at the time was just a website and nothing else.

The team is apparently affiliated with Elliston Baptist Church and Academy in Memphis, similar to how basketball-themed schools like Huntington Prep and others are attached to private schools.

Labissiere, who has also indicated he may consider playing overseas in 2015-16 similar to what Emmanuel Mudiay did, visited UNC in September.

The Tar Heels are among his final six choices, including Baylor, Georgetown, Kentucky, Memphis and Tennessee, but 247Sports' Crystal Ball has Kentucky as a 74 percent favorite to get the commitment.

Ivan Rabb

4 of 4

Position: Power forward

Height, weight: 6'10", 210 lbs

247Sports ranking: 6th

Ivan Rabb is a northern California prospect who has garnered interest from throughout the country, with West Coast, Midwest and schools in the East making offers.

Rabb hasn't scheduled any visits yet, though North Carolina remains on his short list that could include an official visit.

While many players will announce their decisions and/or sign over the next 10 days, Rabb seems to be headed toward making a commitment in the spring and signing after he's done with his final season at Bishop O'Dowd High School.

Rabb met with UNC coach Roy Williams on Oct. 22, but the Tar Heels are considered a distant third—behind Arizona and California—in the race for his pledge.
