Can Brede Hangeland and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar Restore Hope at Arsenal?

Callum D'SouzaJul 29, 2009

With two key players now departing Arsenal, Arsene Wenger will be eager to restore hope in his fans and restore quality in his squad.

With Africans Emmanuel Adebayor, a tall, imposing striker, and Kolo Toure, a reliable, tough, experienced center half, both departing the Emirates for Manchester City for around £40 million, Wenger is looking at gaping holes in his defense and attack.

But Wenger has also gained a considerable amount for the Africans and now has a convenient pair to replace the missing links: Brede Hangeland and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Hangeland, the Fulham and Norwegian center half, had a superb season with surprise packages Fulham. The tall, aerially-dominant defender is rumoured to be linked with a move to the Emirates.

With Toure's speed, strength, and experience no longer with the Arsenal back line, Hangeland would be an excellent replacement, as he ticks all the boxes for a good defender.

Hangeland is set to cost around all of the Toure fee—£15 million.

Real Madrid's Huntelaar would be a terrific replacement for Adebayor. Adebayor brought pace, aerial threat, and great balance to the Arsenal attack, but the Togolese striker did have a tendency to be lazy and inconsistent.

However, Huntelaar is as good, if not better than Adebayor in the air, around his speed, and is a great finisher. The Dutchman is also relatively young and experienced.

Real Madrid is eager to offload Huntelaar, and Arsenal is a perfect club for the Dutchman, as he is keen to play in the EPL and would fit into Arsenal's style of play magnificently.

Huntelaar is set to be around £17-20 million, but Wenger is hoping to lower that offer.

Would signing Brede Hangeland and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar help restore faith among the Arsenal community, and would it give Arsenal a definite chance of winning their first trophy in four years?
