Oscar, Chelsea Agree to New 5-Year Contract: Full Details and Reaction

Nick AkermanNov 10, 2014

Chelsea have awarded hard-working midfielder Oscar with a new five-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2019.

The Blues' official Twitter feed confirmed the Brazilian's extended stay:

Oscar posted a passionate message on his Instagram minutes after the announcement, accompanied with the words: "Until 2019 my heart will keep on pumping BLUE blood! #ComeOnChelsea #ComeOnBlues."

Since joining in the summer of 2012, Oscar has proved himself to be an adaptable, highly creative star at Stamford Bridge, where he is capable of improving both Chelsea's attacking and defensive efforts. He has certainly demolished concerns he was originally too lightweight to forge a successful career in the Premier League.

"I am so happy because I love playing for Chelsea and living in England," said Oscar, reported by Chelsea's official website. "I have enjoyed playing here for two years, and now I have five more, so I am very happy."

The 23-year-old, who has emerged as one of Jose Mourinho's leaders during the current season, is now due to spend his peak years with the west London club. Oscar is a scorer of spectacular goals but has steadily increased his work rate to become a dynamo in Chelsea's midfield.

B/R UK's Sam Tighe offers his thoughts on the player who has netted 27 times in 126 appearances for Chelsea so far:

Mourinho recently praised Oscar for his "evolution," which has seen him develop away from an out-and-out No. 10 role in favour of contributing across the entire pitch. This "allows him to be a fantastic player," according to Mourinho, reported by Sky Sports.

Oscar has already won a Europa League medal during his time with the club, but he will be targeting bigger and better things across the next five years.

Chelsea are currently four points clear at the Premier League summit, comfortable in the Champions League and face Derby in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals. Mourinho's men remain unbeaten in domestic matters and, with Oscar in tow, have an excellent opportunity at capturing silverware during the run to May.
