Big Thinking by Calipari
Kentucky Basketball is a legend in itself, spite the last few years of failure and disappointment. Avid Fans watched in awe as yet another coach was set to be replaced for the 09-10 season. The former ball player turned Coach John Calipari was to be the next head coach of the legendary wildcats. The eight-year $31.65 million deal landed by Calipari made him the nation’s highest paid coach. His record is expressive; taking both UMass and Memphis to the final four, yet his actions are not always easy to follow. Calipari stated in respect to Kentucky, “They don’t put up banners up here for anything else except national champions….that’s why you want to coach here. We want to compete every year and hopefully add to this wall (ESPN)”. Yet, what took so long for him to make that decision. It is clear the money was not the objective because if that was the case he would have never left Memphis. Perhaps, the ego of Calipari should be considered. It is obvious that Calipari is no stranger to the limelight and has no trouble when it comes to making himself noticed. Calipari, a businessman himself, and he did not come to Kentucky because he wanted to cash in on some big blue dollars, he came to raise his own personal ego. With that being said, he made a good move. Kentucky fans love and respect the sport. The bar is set high and so are the expectations for Calipari; the support and team he has, he just needs to follow through and coach exceptionally well.
