The bitter, cold weather of the winter has well and truly arrived, the fireworks have literally gone up in smoke and the John Lewis Christmas advert has made grown men cry—the turn of the year and the January transfer window is almost upon us.

After three defeats in a week, it's all doom and gloom at Liverpool, and it's difficult to tell whether Brendan Rodgers will be trusted to bring in much talent to save the season after having spent so much on such young players in the summer.

Brazilian midfielder Roberto Firmino is also on Liverpool's wanted list, according to Ben Jefferson of the Daily Express.

The 23-year-old has scored three times in 11 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim this season, creating 19 chances, according to Squawka.

Liverpool have joined Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon and Portugal international midfielder William Carvalho, according to Alex Harris of the Daily Star.

With the future of Steven Gerrard uncertain, Harris claims Rodgers is keen to bring the strong 22-year-old to Merseyside.

"Carvalho is contracted at Sporting until 2018, but it is understood he has a £37m buyout clause," Harris adds.

Another midfielder linked to Liverpool is Paris Saint-Germain's Yohan Cabaye, who only left the Premier League with Newcastle United 12 months ago.

James Dickenson of the Daily Express says Liverpool are among a number of clubs to have been linked with a move for Cabaye, who is struggling to hold down a first-team place in the French capital.
