Michael Sam Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation Surrounding Free-Agent DL

Matt FitzgeraldNov 9, 2014

Free-agent defensive lineman Michael Sam is reportedly still drawing plenty of interest from NFL teams despite not having an organization to call home at the moment.

ESPN Insider's Tom Carpenter (subscription required), citing colleague Adam Schefter, reported Sunday that multiple clubs are mulling the possibility of acquiring Sam:

"

Since the Cowboys released him late last month, Sam has heard from close to a half-dozen teams, a league source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Per Schefter, each has taken a wait-and-see approach with Sam, monitoring the situation in the event the team suffers an injury, but they are clearly tracking him. It's still possible Sam could be added to a practice squad in the coming weeks.

Sam was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, but didn't stick on the roster. He was waived from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad a few weeks ago.

Following his departure from Dallas, the former SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year at Missouri had this to say on Twitter:

Sam was the first openly gay player to be drafted. He played at a high level against top-flight college competition and was among the Rams' final cuts, which suggests that he still has a shot to succeed in the NFL.

Whether he gets the opportunity remains to be seen, but Sam's hopes to continue his young career seem to have new life in light of Sunday's report.
