Behind-the-Scenes with Undefeated Boxer Jermell Charlo

Kelsey McCarsonNov 6, 2014

Undefeated junior middleweight Jermell “Ironman” Charlo (24-0, 11 KOs) faces WBO champion Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KOs) on Saturday, December 13 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The bout will be televised live on Showtime along with Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander.

Charlo, age 24, is under the tutelage of world-renowned trainer Ronnie Shields, alongside his twin brother, Jermall, as well as Erislandy Lara, Bryan Vera and several other well-regarded prizefighters.

But Charlo and his cohorts don’t engage in your typical boxing-gym workouts. Under the guidance of strength and conditioning guru Danny Arnold, Charlo and the other fighters at the Plex gym just outside of Houston train alongside professional athletes from all over the world, including NFL, NBA and MLB stars looking to hone their skills using Arnold’s unique training methods.

Boxing Channel sent your favorite boxing writer (me) over to Plex to check things out. Plex Camp with Jermell Charlo is a series dedicated to showcasing a behind-the-scenes look at Charlo’s training camp.

In Episode 1, Charlo discusses how he plans to prepare for the biggest fight of his career. He says he’s the kind of fighter who is always in the gym working hard, whether it is for his next fight or one of his stablemates.

Charlo expects to bring home the WBO title.

Shields gives his point of view too. He says he’s looking forward to seeing Charlo’s six-year journey as a prizefighter finally pay off with a world championship opportunity. Shields has known both Charlo brothers since they were children, so it is especially gratifying for him to help guide their careers.

Episode 1 also introduces boxing fans to Arnold, his unique take for training world-class athletes as well as his holistic approach to getting his fighters ready for fight night.

Finally, Plex Camp with Jermell Charlo features a normal guy (once again, me) trying to keep up with pro fighters. You’ll see me trying to do the types of exercises Charlo does as I fully commit to living as a fighter for six weeks. That means grueling workouts six days a week, healthy eating and everything else a fighter has to do to get ready for a fight.

The culmination of the series will include a three-round sparring contest between Charlo and me, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Corbin’s Corner Medical Fund.
