NHL COO John Collins Comments on League Potentially Using Ads on Jerseys

The National Hockey League is moving forward with a landmark policy of endorsing sponsors by selling advertising space on its players' jerseys.        

John Collins, the league's chief operating officer, offered an update on the impending action, via Octagon-Hockey's Allan Walsh:

Ads are splayed all over the boards below the glass in every NHL arena, but the opportunity to produce more revenue is a significant incentive to officially implement this idea. As Ian Thomas of Sports Business Journal points out, the NHL has almost doubled its revenue since 2006 (h/t theScore's Josh Gold-Smith).

There is an undeniable amount of momentum in professional hockey at the moment, yet it still lags behind more popular North American major professional sports such as the NFL, NBA and MLB.

Bringing in greater profit through the unexplored avenue of jersey ads is a sound strategy that ought to aid the NHL's bid to build on its current promising period of growth.
