Watkins Dealing With Hip Injury
Buffalo Bills rookie sensation Sammy Watkins is dealing with another injury issue as head coach Doug Marrone revealed that he has a hip injury.
Matthew Fairburn of Syracuse.com passed along further information about his status:
"Despite playing every snap and receiving nine targets in the Buffalo Bills' Week 13 win over the Cleveland Browns, rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins is dealing with a hip injury, coach Doug Marrone announced Monday.
Marrone said he wasn't sure if Watkins would miss time or if he would practice, but the injury may help explain why Watkins caught just three of his nine targets for only 11 yards.
'I have no idea,' Marrone said. 'I really don't. We practice Wednesday.'
"
The Bills showed exactly how much faith they had in Watkins to turn around what's been a lackluster offense by trading up to grab him with the fourth overall pick. He's lived up to the hype, quickly developing into the team's biggest playmaker.
He's shown the ability to make virtually every play. Whether it's beating a secondary over the top or working over the middle to pick up the tough yards, he's been the go-to target for the Bills.
Jeff Russo of WKBW provided an interesting note about what Watkins' heavily involvement allowed him to accomplish:
Unfortunately for Buffalo, injuries have also been part of the story, though. The wideout missed time during the preseason due to rib injury that lingered into the regular season. Then there was a brief scare involving his groin as the team prepared to face the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now the question is how much time the latest setback could cost him.
If Watkins does miss time, Robert Woods would become the team's top target with Chris Hogan also picking up some extra looks. Marquise Goodwin, who's also battled consistent injury concerns, is the only other major deep threat.
Ultimately, the Bills don't have anybody capable of filling Watkins' shoes, so they have to hope he can make a quick return to the lineup.
