What Ravens' Team is Mike Preston Looking At?

Jarrett CarterJul 28, 2009

You have to hand it to Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston. He may hack his way through his work, but at least he can identify historic trends.

Take for example today’s offering on the Ravens’ need for the offensive line and quarterback Joe Flacco to step up. Were this 2005, it would be right on the money to surmise that quarterback play and offensive line stability were the keys to a Ravens' Super Bowl run.

There are a couple of things to remember about this assertion. One, every team in the NFL is pretty much reliant on the play of its quarterback and offensive line. Secondly, Joe Flacco wasn’t exactly horrible last year. With a dialed-back offensive, he still produced one of the most prolific rookie seasons in NFL history that led to an AFC Title Game appearance.

Finally, for his claim that the offensive line must step up? A lot of injuries have healed and the Ravens went out and got one of the top linemen in the 2009 NFL Draft in Michael Oher. What else needs to happen to convince you, MP?

Never mind the top receiver on the team retired, or that there is still some concern about Willis McGahee’s role in the offense. No, that’s much too difficult to get into, because targeting people who catch or run the ball isn’t as divisive as focusing on the quarterback and the offensive line.

Column fail.
