Former Ajax star Luis Suarez dominated headlines before Barcelona travelled to Amsterdam to face the Dutch champions, but it was Leo Messi who put the Spanish visitors ahead.

In the 36th minute, Marc Bartra challenged Ajax 'keeper Jasper Jasper Cillessen was near the byline and picked up a loose ball which he crossed toward Messi. The Argentinian simply headed into an empty net.  

In the 76th minute, Messi doubled Barcelona's advantage with a left-footed toe-poke from a Pedro cross.

The goal brought Messi equal with Raul's all-time Champions League goal-scoring record of 71.
