Scotland vs. Argentina: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Rugby Preview

Rory MarsdenNov 6, 2014

Scotland get their autumn internationals off to a challenging start at Murrayfield on Saturday with the visit of Argentina.

In the absence of Grant Gilchrist—out of all Scotland's November Tests with a broken arm, per BBC Sport—scrum-half Greig Laidlaw will captain the home side as they look to turn around a poor record against the Pumas.

Argentina come into the match buoyed by their first ever Rugby Championship win at the beginning of October and will be eager to keep their form going.

The recent history of this fixture at Murrayfield does not read well for Scotland fans and their team as Argentina won in their last encounter in 2009 and have not lost in Edinburgh since their first visit in 1990.

However, when not in the Scottish capital, Scotland seem to fare quite well against Argentina. Three of the last four times they have met, the Scots have prevailed—most recently 21-19 in Cordoba in June—the exception being a narrow loss at the 2011 World Cup.

Thus, in terms of recent form between the two sides, there is little to separate them.

Argentina come into the match on the back of an historic 21-17 victory over Australia—coming back from 14-0 down—which was their first victory in the Rugby Championship since it was made into a four-team tournament back in 2012, per Rugby World:

Daniel Hourcade's men should take huge momentum and confidence from that win and they will look to continue their long-term dominance over the Scots in Edinburgh.

However, the Pumas will be all too aware of their summer home loss to Scotland—which came late on thanks to a Duncan Weir penalty—and must be disciplined on Saturday.

It has been a mixed 2014 for Scotland, and Saturday will see Vern Cotter make his home debut as head coach, having taken over ahead of a relatively successful summer tour following a largely disastrous Six Nations campaign.

Their only victory in the Six Nations was a single-point win over Italy and Scotland desperately need to sort out their home form. They have lost four on the bounce at Murrayfield.

Indeed, Laidlaw insists Murrayfield must become a fortress, and he is looking for his team to be aggressive in the coming Tests, with New Zealand and Tonga to come after Argentina, per BBC Sport:

"

What we need to do is get stuck in, we really need to get hammered into teams, especially at Murrayfield. We need to make this a horrible place for teams to come. They need to feel as if the walls are closing in on their lives as we squeeze them every time they have the ball.

"

With the World Cup starting in under a year, both Argentina and Scotland are running out of preparation time for rugby's biggest tournament.

Saturday's opening autumn international for both sides is thus more important than in a normal year and each will be desperate to kick things off well in November with a win likely to build essential momentum.
