Napoli vs. Roma: Key Players in Napoli's Win

Matthew AmalfitanoNov 3, 2014

Napoli impressively defeated Roma 2-0 at the Stadio San Paolo in Round 10 action.  The scoreline tells a different story, however, as the Partenopei could have easily netted a few more goals.

Rafael Benitez's men dominated the Giallorossi for large stretches of the match and displayed a convincing performance against a top Scudetto contender.

Let's take a look at Napoli's best performers against Roma:

Kalidou Koulibaly, Centre-Back

Kalidou Koulibaly put in another impressive performance as he makes his claim to be Napoli’s best signing this year. The 23-year-old made seven interceptions and eight tackles, per FourFourTwo's Stats Zone.

The relative ease in which he dispossessed Gervinho and Miralem Pjanic throughout the match is what greatly pleased fans. The centre-back was very cool in possession, recording 88 per cent pass completion, per WhoScored.com. Koulibaly also won man of the match honours.

David Lopez, Defensive Midfielder

David Lopez put in arguably his best performance in the Azzurri shirt. The midfielder was purchased from Espanyol this summer, but he had failed to make a real impact before Sunday's match.

The 25-year-old faced a challenge in the midfield as he was outnumbered against Roma’s three-man setup. However, paired alongside Jorginho in the double pivot, Lopez’s tenacity and work-rate helped to stamp his authority in the match.

Lorenzo Insigne, Left Attacking Midfielder

3 of 3

Lorenzo Insigne did not enjoy the greatest of starts this season. The Neapolitan native had been heavily criticised by his own fans early on, but he has improved steadily, most notably since his goal and assist against Torino.

The 23-year-old was favoured over Dries Mertens and quickly showed why he deserved the starting spot. Insigne was lively throughout the entire match, constantly troubling Roma’s defence.

The Italian international’s deflected cross found Gonzalo Higuain in the third minute to give the Partenopei an early lead. Insigne also completed four dribbles, per FourFourTwo's Stats Zone.
