Johnny Manziel Pranked Friend by Tweeting Phone Number to His Followers

Dan CarsonNov 3, 2014

UPDATE: Tuesday, November 4 at 9:28 a.m. ET.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Manziel tweeted the phone number of a friend who had been "bugging" him, and that the subsequent tweet filled said friend's voicemail in under an hour.

Manziel left the tweet up for five minutes before deleting it.

---End of Update---

Johnny Manziel admitted Monday that a mysterious tweet he sent over the weekend was part of a prank he pulled on a friend.

The Cleveland Browns backup quarterback raised eyebrows Friday when he tweeted what appeared to be his own personal phone number:

Manziel deleted the tweet and cleared up its origin Monday, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, via Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.

Smith tweeted Mortensen’s report, which claims the number Manziel sent to his 1.22 million followers belonged to a friend he was pranking:

This news surely comes as a letdown for Johnny Football fanatics, many of whom probably believed Manziel accidentally tweeted his digits in a spiked-cider haze on Halloween night.

As for Manziel’s friend, one can only imagine that he or she has since changed numbers and/or thrown the phone into the River Styx to stop the constant ringing.

Having listed a friend’s brand-new car on Craigslist along with his personal contact number, I’ve seen the havoc this kind of gag can wreak on a cell phone. I can only imagine the kind of mayhem that could cause with over a million people on the receiving end. The phone might’ve literally caught fire.

To recap, Johnny Manziel ruined his buddy’s day just for a laugh, which, for better or worse, is exactly what good friends do.
