Joe Flacco, Torrey Smith, Steve Smith's Post-Week 9 Fantasy Reaction

Chris RolingNov 2, 2014

Joe Flacco's downward fantasy football spiral continued in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and took one of his star wideouts down in the process.

Flacco tossed an early interception and touchdown in the first half on the road, totaling just 127 yards by the half. Torrey Smith was the recipient of the score and totaled two grabs for 49 yards in the process. Explosive veteran Steve Smith floundered in that same time frame with two catches for 21 yards.

The final numbers show how the two stacked up:

For Flacco owners, it may be time to look elsewhere. Since rattling off 32 points in Week 6, he scored 14 and four before Sunday's performance. The final numbers say it all:

J. Flacco30/453036.72118

The same cannot be said for Torrey Smith, who now has three double-digit outings in his past four games despite Flacco's struggles. His goose egg in Week 8 actually occurred due to injury. Provided he is on the market since he is owned in just 79.9 percent of leagues, the obvious thing to do is grab him now.

In that same span, though, Smith Sr. has failed to score in double digits since Week 6. As Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus notes, his opportunities were much of the same as his younger counterpart in the first half:

To be fair, the senior Smith set an unsustainable rate in the opening weeks of the season and has come back down to Earth as a high-end WR3 now that the Ravens have found some semblance of a running game.

With that in mind, the younger Smith has flourished as the big-play threat now that a ground game actually keeps defenses honest. He is a high-upside WR2 on a weekly basis, although the buy-low window is slammed shut. Start him with confidence if obtained, though.
