Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the United States Grand Prix ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday night, with Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull completing the podium positions in Austin.

The British driver managed to get past his rival, who had started the race in pole position, on Lap 24 to further extend his lead over the German in the drivers’ standings to 24 points, with now only two more grands prix left in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

And Hamilton’s victory was also the 32nd of his Formula One career, a new national record overtaking Nigel Mansell in the process with what was a fifth straight win, the very first time he has achieved that feat.

However, even if Hamilton wins in Sao Paulo next weekend and Rosberg fails to even finish, the fight for the championship will still go down to the final contest in Yas Marina on November 23 with double points available to the victor of that last encounter.
