USA Eagles vs. New Zealand All Blacks: Score and Report from Tour Test Match

Tom SunderlandNov 1, 2014

New Zealand rounded off a rare trip to America with a 74-6 demolition of their United States hosts on Saturday, getting their autumn international series off to a booming start at Chicago's Soldier Field.

Steve Hansen fielded a mixed line-up of experience and youth for the celebrated Test trip, a result which eclipsed the average of their previous meetings with the Eagles, per OptaJonny:

The All Blacks took their time in getting up to full speed, and in the early exchanges, the United States looked as though they may be putting up a fight, registering their only points inside the first 17 minutes.

The home outfit managed to limit their guests to just one try at that point, hooker Nathan Harris capitalising on some quick initiative from Aaron Cruden to open his team's account.

Eagles fly-half Adam Siddall notched two penalties to keep the margin within six points after Cory Jane grabbed New Zealand's second, but after Hansen's men found their gear, the floodgates opened wide.

Ex-England international and broadcaster Brian Moore noted the clinical assault of the away side, giving the American audience a first-hand lesson in what a punishing machine New Zealand can be:

As the fixture wore on, it became clear as to the gulf in fluidity and confidence between the two sides, Sonny Bill Williams in particular enjoying his return to the All Blacks fold.

Having enjoyed his time in rugby league with the Sydney Roosters, Williams was clearly eager to re-join his union brethren, tweeting prior to kickoff of his excitement:

And the return was marked with a brace of tries from the centre, who showed no signs of rustiness in his native sport, with only a couple of games in the ITM Cup with Counties Manukau to speak of in recent weeks.

A mixture of United States complacency and individual brilliance from Williams saw the man-marvel cruise over twice in the space of 10 minutes leading up to the midway interval, Rugby World's Charlie Morgan heaping praise on his performance:

At half-time, the fixture was already far beyond the American hosts, the official All Blacks Twitter account quoting native commentators in hinting at a possible secret in New Zealand's formula:

Lasting until half-time with the scoreline within touching distance may never have been an option for the United States, but with such a mountain to climb in the second period, they were always forced to chase.

It made for an easier canter as far as New Zealand were concerned, and Hansen proceeded to ring the changes from his bench, ushering in a new cast of equally terrifying talents.

Among that assortment sat Julian Savea, who had come on in the first half to score his first before dotting down for a second just two minutes from time.

Joe Moody, Cruden, Israel Dagg and Sam Cane also touched down in the second half to round off a gaping result for the Rugby Championship and Rugby World Cup titleholders, but one that was never considered unrealistic.

In the grand scheme of things, this fixture was always going to be a promotional tool rather than a spectacle of close parameters on the pitch.

It would appear to have done its job, too, as a capacity crowd watched on to show rugby is an evolving sport in North America, and one the United States is likely to continue growing in for years to come.
