Mile Favorite: Toronado
The $2 million Mile race features Toronado as the clear favorite. The four-year-old Irish thoroughbred is attempting to notch the first Breeders' Cup victory for exemplary trainer Richard Hannon, Jr. As AttheRaces.com opines, Toronado has separated himself as the best miler in the world:
"There is little on paper for Toronado to fear from his rivals, having already shown himself patently superior to any European-trained rival he is likely to face, never mind the home team, which looks decidedly sub-par in the absence of American superstar Wise Dan. Everything looks set for a big run from this son of High Chapparal, who looks the best British hope at the meeting and a worthy favourite with the predicted fast ground unlikely to be a problem.
"
Mostly racing on the international circuit, Toronado might be a bit of an unknown to the American racing fan due to his lack of graded races. However, his last appearance was a victory at the Grade 1 Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, illustrating his ability to beat stiff European competition.
Wise Dan would have likely been the favorite, as the two-time American Horse of the Year is the defending champion in the mile. But with his scratch, Toronado stands mostly unchallenged, apart from frequent bridesmaid Anodin or top American hope Seek Again.
Turf Favorite: Flintshire
The $3 million Turf race presents the second-largest purse of the weekend, but unlike the other two, there is no undisputed favorite. Though he possesses top odds, Flintshire only narrowly leads a host of other top favorites.
Flintshire is the rare favorite who has shown an inability to close out races. The four-year-old is winless in his past six starts, and has not won since the Grade 1 stakes Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris back in July 2013. Nevertheless, his consistency (second in three of past four races) and recent peak form has led some to place their confidence in the British horse:
Telescope and Main Sequence hold the next best odds, and both present significant challenges to Flintshire. The latter is the top American favorite, and has won each of his past three starts, all Grade 1 races. Ultimately, do not be surprised if Main Sequence emerges as the winner, as he is the hottest horse in the field.
Classic Favorite: Shared Belief
The weekend's premier race will showcase a horse who is unfamiliar to fans that only follow the sport during Triple Crown season. But Shared Belief would have presented a difficult challenge to California Chrome over the first two legs, and now with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion in the field, he has an opportunity to assert himself as the best three-year-old in the world.
Shared Belief is the only horse in the field with a spotless win-loss record, having won all seven of his starts. That includes three Grade 1 victories since returning from a right hoof injury, and that form has trainer Jerry Hollendorfer outwardly confident:
Of course, the Classic is the toughest field of the week, and the 14-horse start will make for plenty of traffic for Shared Belief. Besides Triple Crown winners Chrome and Tonalist, other horses like Moreno, Bayern and Cigar Street have had recent success, including at Santa Anita Park. Shared Belief is likely the most talented horse in the field, but the sheer quality of competition makes him a difficult proposition to back when placed against the field.
