WWE Night of Champions: Good Twist of Fate or Bad Punk?
In a surprising "twist of fate," we saw CM Punk drop his World Heavyweight Championship to "The Charismatic Enigma" Jeff Hardy last night at the Night of Champions PPV.
I was personally thrown off by this, and while I should have seen it coming I didn't think the WWE would actually do it.
See, the WWE does not want Jeff Hardy to leave. They have offered him many deals that were well worth signing, Hardy even said that they were good enough. However, he has yet to sign a long term deal with the WWE.

It is true that he just signed a one month deal that will go through Summerslam, but that would make you think he would just drop the title to someone then at the PPV. Now, the WWE feels that by putting the World Heavyweight Title on him, it will persuade him to stay, but will it work?
In my personal opinion, they are basically saying that Jeff Hardy is more important to the WWE than CM Punk. Why?
Think of this, the WWE made Punk drop the title to Hardy because they wanted Hardy to stay. Yet, Punk is just now turning heel. So one would think that you would keep the World Title on him to get more and more heat from the WWE Universe.
By taking the title off him, you are basically making him weak. Punk is doing great as a heel right now, better than I thought he would. He was not as popular as a good guy like the WWE wanted, so they figured turning him heel would give him a boost.
It was working quite well, and by having him as World Heavyweight Champion it made the crowd want to see him lose even more. Sure, Hardy is massively over with the fans, but the character development is more important to me rather than seeing Hardy stay.
Hardy has said numerous times that he wants to take time off; longer than the WWE would allow under contract. Since he knows he wants to take a year or two off, while also doing things he is interested in like motocross, painting, etc. He wants to not be held down by the WWE.
He mentioned a few times that he wants to come back after the long break, and he has done everything the WWE has asked of him along the way. He even signed a new deal to stay through Summerslam, which is when The Undertaker is expected to be back.
Hardy is bound and determined to leave once the deal is over, so the title means nothing to him. Well, the title probably means a lot, but it has no effect on him staying or going.
So why put the title on him in hopes that he will stay? Realize that the WWE knows he wants to go, they know he has not signed a long term deal, and they know he needs time off anyway.
Other than Edge, Hardy has been in more matches in 2009 than anyone. In the last 365 days, Hardy has been in more matches than anyone else. He has not had a break since his suspension from the WWE last year.
He has been on WWE TV and house shows every single week since then, so he would want to take time off anyway even if he signs a new deal with them.
So putting the World Heavyweight Title on him means nothing because he will be gone from TV anyway. To me, it makes no sense to take the title off Punk.
You have so much you could do with him as World Heavyweight Champion, yet now he will have to win it back which won't happen right off from the WWE's history with him.
Keep in mind, the WWE is going to have John Morrison face Hardy for the title at Summerslam. So, will the WWE have him lose the title to Morrison or have a triple threat match where Punk wins the title back?
If it's one on one, it is pretty obvious Morrison will be Champion. But I don't see that happening because many within the WWE feel Morrison is not ready to be a World Champion yet.
Now, word around the WWE is that they want to put the title on Morrison to push him as a big time face.
Because Hardy will most likely be gone, Morrison has to be the big time face for the brand. Taker will add to the face depth, but who else can main event as faces other than those two?
Rey Mysterio is there, but Vince McMahon has said numerous times that he does not consider Mysterio a main event face. He has also had his issues with the WWE regarding his contract.
So basically the WWE are crippled in what they can do.
I feel Morrison is worthy of a World Title, but will they put it on him? Not to sure.
Also, does it make sense to have Morrison face Hardy to help him become a bigger face? Hardy is the most over man in the company with fans, so Morrison would turn out as more of a heel than anything else.
It wouldn't make sense to have him face Hardy and beat him getting a shower of boos from fans, how does that make him a bigger face?
I personally think Morrison will be a part of the title match at Summerslam, but CM Punk will be too. A triple threat match works better than anything else, because it doesn't hurt anyone's face or heel value and a title change can easily happen.
Still though, having Punk lose the title to Hardy in chances Hardy will stay makes no sense. The WWE should know this if you ask me.
While Hardy won't complain about being World Champion, he knows he won't be around much longer. Punk will be around for a while. So in the end who adds more value to your company? I'm just saying.
