Breeders' Cup 2014 Odds: Lines and Predictions for All Horses on Friday

Steven CookOct 31, 2014

While folks will have to wait for Saturday for the 2014 Breeders' Cup main event, the action begins on Friday with four enticing races that will serve as much more than an appetizer.

The annual premier horse-racing event was stretched to two days back in 2007, and that means viewers can catch the 13 high-caliber races starting on Friday afternoon. Folks will have to wait until Saturday to catch the likes of California Chrome and Bayern, but more than a couple of household names will be in action on Friday.

Take a look below for betting odds and previews for each of the four Friday races.

The Juvenile Turf will open up the 2014 Breeders' Cup with Hootenanny assuming the favorite status, but a handful of contenders in the one-mile race are more than capable of knocking him off.

It will be hard to count out the heavy favorite with 3-1 odds, however. He's lined up for just four races in his life, but won two and finished in the top three in the others. All four came in 2014.

As for those threatening Hootenanny, look no further than War Envoy. He has just one victory in seven starts, but finished in the top three in four others.

Emily White has War Envoy taking the $1 million prize:

War Envoy should be counted on to finish in the top of the pack once again, but it's Hootenanny's race to lose. He's peaking at the right time coming off a second-place finish at the Darley Prix Morny.

For a sleeper pick, look for Conquest Typhoon—who has finished in first or second in all four of his lifetime appearances—to crack the top three at 12-1.

Prediction: 1. Hootenanny, 2. War Envoy, 3. Conquest Typhoon

Goldencents is all the rage entering Friday's second of four races in the Dirt Mile.

The four-year-old colt is a huge favorite for the Dirt Mile, with gaping 6-5 odds of victory. It's pretty easy to see why, as he is looking to defend last year's win, per TVG:

With nearly $2.5 million in career earnings, Goldencents couldn't take advantage of Triple Crown opportunities in 2013. But he's been a force this year, with one win and three place finishes in four starts.

Goldencents will dominate this one, leaving a dead heat between the other eight horses for the final two finishing spots. Tapiture will be among the top ones, with jockey Rosie Napravnik using her experience to ride the 6-1 horse to a second-place finish.

Vicar's in Trouble had trouble (I'll see myself out) in the Kentucky Derby with a 19th-place finish, but will show his worth at 12-1 by coming in third.

Prediction: 1. Goldencents, 2. Tapiture, 3. Vicar's in Trouble

The top fillies at Santa Anita Park will compete in the Longines Distaff—Friday's nightcap—but that doesn't leave any shortage of worthy contenders for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Longtime trainer Wesley Ward boasts the favorite, with Sunset Glow looking to build off a masterful 2014. Sunset Glow has three wins and two places in five 2014 starts, and she should continue that roll through Friday's race.

Sunset Glow is a domestic horse, but most of her contenders will hail from overseas. Six of the 16 contenders are from another country, most notably Lady Eli.

With 6-1 odds, TVG's Frank Mirahmadi likes Lady Eli in Friday's race:

Sunslet Glow will be pushed to the brink by Lady Eli, but her experience will pay off with yet another 2014 victory.

The race for third won't be nearly as competitive, but Osaila from Ireland will rule it and finish comfortably in third.

Prediction: 1. Sunset Glow, 2. Lady Eli, 3. Osaila

1L'Amour de Ma Vie15-1
2Tiz Midnight10-1
3Iotapa6-1
4Belle Gallantey6-1
5Unbridled Forever20-1
6Stanwyck20-1
7Don't Tell Sophia5-1
8Valiant Emilia20-1
9Ria Antonia15-1
10Untapable5-2
11Close Hatches3-1

The Longines Distaff is the biggest competition on Friday's slate, but a lot more is on the line than a $2 million prize.

The winner of the Longines Distaff will be able to call herself the top filly in horse racing, at least for the moment. And it's hard to argue that Untapable isn't the top leader.

She has wins in five of his six 2014 appearances, proving to be almost deadly for the horses going up against Untapable in recent showings. She has $1.7 million in career earnings to her name, but will more than double that on Friday.

Untapable will show her worth and win for the sixth time in 2014, but Tiz Midnight will give her a run for her money. She's a big underdog, but trainer Bob Baffert will have his horse ready and jockey Victor Espinoza's experience will shine through.

Close Hatches won't fulfill her 3-1 odds with a win, but she'll sneak into the top three.

Prediction: 1. Untapable, 2. Tiz Midnight, 3. Close Hatches
