Shared Belief Wins Classic
The weekend's premier race also brings the field with the biggest names. Triple Crown racing fans will recognize California Chrome and Tonalist, the winners of the three spring races. However, it is another three-year-old who stands out as the clear favorite and likely winner of the $5 million race.
Shared Belief was unable to run in the Triple Crown, due to injuries, but the three-year-old is on pace to establish himself as the leading candidate for Horse of the Year. As his jockey, Mike Smith, opines, the horse has been running extremely well in the lead-up to the Classic:
Additionally, Shared Belief has drawn the No. 6 post, from which the last two Classic winners have started. But while the inside post position will allow Shared Belief to follow the lead pace closely in traffic, California Chrome's outside starting position also appears conducive to his strengths, as ESPN.com's Gary West notes:
"Shared Belief will start the Classic from post position No. 6, which should work well for him, as it will enable him to sit behind two speedsters, Moreno, who has No. 4, and Bayern who drew No. 7. Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome will start from No. 13, which should work well for him, given that he abhors traffic and prefers to be outside rivals.
"
With top contenders such as Bayern and Tonalist in the field as well, the Classic is far more than a two-horse race. Cigar Street may be another second-level contender to watch, as he has won four of his past five races, though none have been Grade 1 stakes victories.
Nevertheless, Shared Belief's track record suggests he is the best horse in the field. After winning his previous race at Santa Anita, look for Shared Belief to repeat on the same track and confirm suspicions that he would have challenged Chrome during the Triple Crown circuit.
Daredevil Wins Juvenile
American Pharoah had established himself as the favorite in this race, which showcases the top two-year-old males in the world. But after X-rays discovered a deep bruise in his foot following a pre-race workout, the favorite has been scratched, thus opening up the field:
Consequently, Daredevil has been installed as the new betting favorite. He was always a legitimate threat to American Pharoah, as, despite his wide starting post, Daredevil's tendency for quick starts likely would have set a difficult pace for Pharoah and the other horses to sustain.
Daredevil has had only two career races, but he won his only career Grade 1 stakes race, the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park, on Oct. 4. Carpe Diem and One Lucky Dane also look like close secondary favorites, as all three are starting from one of the five outside posts.
The Juvenile winner often establishes himself as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby the following spring. Though American Pharoah's absence will put a dent in this field, look for the victor to receive significant attention as Triple Crown season approaches.
Flintshire Wins Turf
The Turf, which gives out the second-biggest purse behind the Classic, has a bit of a muddied field. Though there is no overwhelming favorite, Flintshire has become the general consensus as the favorite:
Flintshire has been extremely consistent, finishing out of the top four in just one of his 10 career races, but he has had difficulty closing things out, failing to win any of his past six races. Of course, that stretch includes three second-place finishes in his past four races, illustrating his ability to compete through any conditions against a multitude of competition.
Flintshire does have the experience of victory, having won the Grade 1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris back in July 2013. The four-year-old has been a consistent presence at Grade 1 races over the past two years, so while there are legitimate questions about his ability to close, Flintshire's track record makes him the narrow favorite at the Turf.
