Manny Pacquiao Comments on Potential Fight vs. Floyd Mayweather in 2015

Tyler ConwayOct 27, 2014

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Manny Pacquiao says he's ready to fight Floyd Mayweather

Asked about the possibility of the oft-hyped megafight at a promotional trip in Hong Kong, Pacquiao said he hopes his and Mayweather's sides can come to an agreement in 2015.

"Hopefully that fight will happen by next year," Pacquiao said, per The Telegraph. "I'm crossing my fingers that that fight will happen but right now my mind is already set to focus on my next fight with Algieri. I think the time to talk about that issue is after the fight."

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight American Chris Algieri on Nov. 22 in Macau, China. Mayweather, who defeated Marcos Maidana in a September unanimous decision, does not have an opponent locked in for his scheduled Showtime pay-per-view in May. Depending on his health following the Algieri bout, it is possible that Pacquiao will be at full health in time to finally get these two all-time greats in the ring together.

Mayweather and Pacquiao have been linked for most of the last half-decade. Though their two camps have been deep in negotiations at multiple junctures, the prizefight, which would likely challenge the all-time record for pay-per-view purchases, has never gotten done. Earlier this month Floyd Mayweather Sr. told Ben Thompson of FightHype.com that the two biggest stars in boxing will one day get in the ring together.

"It's gonna happen. That fight's gonna happen. Trust me," Floyd Mayweather Sr. said. "That fight's definitely gonna happen. It's a fight for the world, man, right there. It's the biggest fight that has ever been in life, so like I said, man, that fight's gonna happen."

The two sides will have to act fast to make the fight happen. Mayweather told reporters before his second bout with Maidana that he will retire after his contractual obligations with Showtime end. The pound-for-pound king will fight undisclosed opponents next May and September, ending the lucrative six-fight arrangement signed in 2013.
