Red Wings vs. Penguins Live Blog: Instant Reactions and Analysis

Andrew PetyakOct 23, 2014

The Detroit Red Wings roared back to defeat the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, in overtime from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Thanks for joining us here at the Bleacher Report for live updates and analysis of all the bone-crushing hits, wicked goals and big-time saves.

The Red Wings took advantage of crucial mistakes and Pittsburgh turnovers to erase a two-goal deficit with under five minutes to play.

The Penguins continue to struggle in the third period this season, with two of their three losses coming in dramatic fashion in the waning minutes of the game. Even with a new scheme and system, it's clear Pittsburgh getting too relaxed in trying to close out the opposition.

Game Preview:

The Red Wings are struggling to find the back of the net two weeks into the season, notching just two goals per game. A fruitless power play that's scored just two goals in 24 chances is partially to blame. However, Detroit has managed to accumulate points in five of its six games because of some stellar team defense, allowing only 1.5 goals per game.

Pittsburgh will look to redeem itself after a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night. The Penguins defense looks lost in a new system at times and fails to cover efficiently when in the defensive zone.

Thomas Greiss will make his debut in net for the team, according to Jenn Menendez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It will be interesting to see how the Penguins play in front of Greiss as opposed to regular starter Marc-Andre Fleury, who struggled mightily Wednesday night in a 5-3 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Coming off a tough loss, look for the Penguins to try to use their speed early to draw a quick penalty to get their first-ranked power play on the ice.

Detroit will counter with a sound defensive system, forcing the Penguins to play a methodical dump-and-chase game.

How Pittsburgh is able to adjust to the Red Wings will largely determine the outcome of this bout.
