Georgia Football: Early Odds for the Bulldogs' Team MVP

Brian JonesOct 23, 2014

The Georgia Bulldogs are in a great spot right now at 6-1 and No. 9 in the AP Poll.

What’s even more important is that they are 4-1 in the SEC East and have sole possession of first place.

There are a lot of reasons the Bulldogs have had a lot of success during the first half of the season, but when it’s all said and done, the players that needed to step up have done so in a big way.

With a few injured players getting healthy as well as a possible suspended player returning for the Florida game, the Bulldogs are looking to do some big things at the end of the season.

If there is one player that has been the key reason for the team's success, who would it be?

Here are the early odds for the Bulldogs’ team MVP.

Leonard Floyd

1 of 5

Leonard Floyd emerged on the scene last season, leading the team with 6.5 sacks.

He is now on his way to having a great 2014 season, totalling five sacks, six tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Floyd is an outside linebacker and is great at rushing off the edge, but he can also play sideline-to-sideline with 34 tackles.

He is one of the players to have reaped the benefits of defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s scheme. There is no reason he can’t continue his strong play the next five games.

Odds for MVP: 10 percent

Amarlo Herrera

2 of 5

As good as Floyd is, Amarlo Herrera is leader of the defense and has really taken his game to another level this year. He leads the team with 57 tackles, but he also has three sacks, six tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries.

Herrera is the most experienced and dependable defensive player, having started in over 35 games. He was named team defensive MVP last year because he was able to help his fellow linebackers make plays while making key contributions himself.

With Pruitt at the helm, he is using Herrera’s strengths. As a result, the senior inside linebacker is having a breakout season.

Odds for MVP: 15 percent

Nick Chubb

3 of 5

Chubb has only started in two games, but he has played a good amount overall this season and is on pace to have over 1,000 rushing yards.

Georgia is a run-first team, and Chubb was able to lead the team to wins over Missouri and Arkansas, the two games without Todd Gurley.

Chubb has shown that he is durable, can run between the tackles and can make explosive plays. Despite being a true freshman, he has become one of the leaders on offense in a short amount of time.

Odds for MVP: 20 percent

Todd Gurley

4 of 5

I know Gurley is suspended and there’s really no telling when he’ll return this season. However, with the Bulldogs doing everything possible to make sure he comes back soon, he will no doubt be ready to roll through the rest of the schedule.

As good as Chubb has been for the Bulldogs, there is no other running back in the country like Gurley. Despite missing two games this year, he is second in the SEC in rushing touchdowns and still leads the conference in yards per carry and rushing yards.

Chubb was a key player in the Bulldogs' last two wins, but the reason they were able to defeat Clemson, Tennessee and Vanderbilt was the play of Gurley, who was the leading candidate to win the Heisman Trophy before he was suspended.

Odds for MVP: 25 percent

Hutson Mason

5 of 5

As vital as Gurley has been this season, Hutson Mason is the leader of the team and has been the constant all season long.

Because of the way the Bulldogs run the ball, Mason has not thrown for a lot of yards and has not thrown a lot of touchdowns. However, he’s smart with the football and he’s very accurate.

He’s not Aaron Murray, but he doesn’t need to be. Mason is an experienced quarterback and is getting better each time he’s out on the field.

With him learning under Murray the last four seasons, he’s taking full advantage of his final year in Athens.

Odds for MVP: 30 percent
