Chelsea vs. Maribor: Goals, Highlights from the Champions League Tie

Ryan BaileyOct 21, 2014

Chelsea took the lead over Slovenian champions Maribor at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night thanks to a wonderful left-footed finish from Loic Remy.

Picking up the ball in the final third on a counter-attack in the 13th minute, the Frenchman weaved between Maribor's defence before shooting low from outside the box.

Unfortunately, Remy injured his groin in the process of scoring and had to be immediately substituted.

Didier Drogba—a veteran of many famous European nights with the Blues—took his place.

The Ivorian duly added a goal of his own in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot after Maribor's Ales Mertelj handled in the area.

After Drogba's goal, John Terry made it feel like it was 2008 again when he added Chelsea's third. In a 31st-minute counter attack, the Blues defender ran almost the entire length of the field to finish off a counter attack move and bury a pass from Cesc Fabregas.

In the 54th minute, the Blues extended their lead to four goals when Eden Hazard received the ball in front of goal after a storming Filipe Luis run down the left. The Belgian then tried to cut the ball back to Drogba, but his pass was turned into the net by Maribor's Mitja Viler for an own goal.

Maribor managed to win a penalty in the 63rd minute when Nemanja Matic brought down Agim Ibraimi. The Macedonian winger took the resulting spot kick himself, but the ball ended up striking Petr Cech's left post.

It clearly wasn't Maribor's night, and it got worse 15 minutes later when they conceded a rather soft penalty when Branislav Ivanovic went down.

Eden Hazard calmly stepped up to make it 5-0.

In the 90th minute, Hazard finished off the scoring with the best goal of the evening. Picking up a perfect long ball from youngster Nathan Ake, the 23-year-old was given enough space and time to compose himself and fire off a lovely goal from around 12 yards.

A stunning end to a great performance from the Blues.
