Charles Godfrey Released by Carolina Panthers: Latest Details and Analysis

R. Cory SmithOct 21, 2014

Following yet another horrid game from the Carolina Panthers defense against the Green Bay Packers, the team has released safety Charles Godfrey.

In an official release from the Panthers, head coach Ron Rivera spoke about the decision to cut Godfrey:

"

Making this move was difficult because Charles has been a large part of what we have done since I came to Carolina four years ago. He has always tried to do everything we have asked of him and worked extremely hard. He is an outstanding young man and we wish him the very best.

His agent Doug Hendrickson offered his thoughts on the move:

Jeff Gravley of WRAL notes the other move made by the Panthers following Godfrey's release:

During his time with the Panthers, Godfrey has played in 82 games over seven seasons, tallying a total of 372 tackles, seven forced fumbles and 11 interceptions. Godfrey also took a pay cut in the offseason following an Achilles injury last year.

Since his move to free safety this season, however, the results have not been great. Black and Blue Review provides a look at the uninspiring numbers for Godfrey in the nickel package:

Godfrey now has a chance to find a new home after being released. Injuries are a common occurrence in the NFL, so he'll likely find a new home if a team needs his services.

Carolina's defense has been ravaged recently, allowing an average of 34.8 points per game in the last five games. Heading into a home matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, it will be up to the remaining defensive players to step up against Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson.
