Barcelona Transfer News: Luis Suarez Feared Bite Would Wreck Liverpool Exit

Rory MarsdenOct 20, 2014

Luis Suarez has revealed his summer worries that his World Cup biting antics had wrecked the possibility of a move from Liverpool to Barcelona.

The former Red was banned from all football-related activity for four months after biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini in a group-stage match in Brazil.

The Uruguayan has conceded that in the wake of the incident and the suspension, he feared he had scuppered his chances for a dream move to the La Liga giants, per TV3 (h/t Sky Sports):

"

I thought that I had ruined my career. At first, I wanted nothing to do with anyone. I shut me and my family away from the world, but upon reflection, I asked for forgiveness and I felt liberated.

By then, the initial contacts with Barcelona had begun and when Pere [Guardiola, his agent] called me to tell me that it was a done deal, I started crying, because of the situation I was going through and for the support Barcelona was offering me. I felt so happy with the commitment the club showed with me.

I was afraid Barcelona were going to back off, due to the repercussions surrounding the incident; I was conscious of the fact that this could happen.

"

Indeed, his worries were unfounded, as he eventually made the £75 million switch to join Luis Enrique's men and will finally be eligible to play for Barca in Saturday's La Liga game.

Typically for Suarez—who has held his fair share of the limelight in his career for reasons both good and bad—this weekend sees Barcelona travelling to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season. It's a fitting stage for Suarez's debut.

The 27-year-old scored 31 goals for Liverpool last season, taking them within a whisker of Premier League glory, and will be eager to get on the scoresheet as early as possible for his new side.

Suarez scored twice on his return to the Uruguay side last week and could potentially line up alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar—who have 15 La Liga goals between them already this season per WhoScored.com—against Madrid, a mouthwatering prospect per football writer Spanish football writer Sergi Dominguez:

As yet it is unknown whether Saurez will start against Los Blancos or not, with his lack of competitive action in recent months potentially counting against him in this regard. However, he says he will have no problem either way but insists he wants to end his career at the Camp Nou—dashing Liverpool fans' hopes he may one day return—and is eager to play, per TV3 (via Nick Lustig of the Daily Star):

"

I won't be angry, I want to help my teammates and show what I can do as a player. It's a dream come true to play for a team that you've always wanted to play for and if I have the opportunity to retire here, at Barca. It would be the perfect end to my career and I'd like to continue living in Barcelona for the love and care of my family.

"

Barca are currently top of La Liga with 22 points from eight games and have yet to concede a goal. Suarez's return to action will surely be a huge positive for a high-performing side. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he will no doubt be put into action at some point against Real.

He is seemingly raring to go, and after months of sitting on the sidelines—and worrying whether his move would actually go through—Suarez can finally make an impact for Barcelona this weekend.
