Denard Robinson, Bryce Brown and Top Fantasy Waiver-Wire Targets for Week 8

R. Cory SmithOct 20, 2014

Every week, a new star rises in the NFL and gives fantasy owners hope. In some cases, those players show true promise for the future, which can help toward the remainder of the season.

Whether it's due to injuries or players simply stepping up, the waiver wire is stocked with potential at running back. Between Denard Robinson and Bryce Brown, owners have either a potential stopgap or possible workhorse, respectively, for the rest of the season.

Along with the two tailbacks, the more familiar Carson Palmer looks like a quarterback to own moving forward. With all three owned in less than 10 percent of leagues, they are worth an add for teams in need.

Carson Palmer, QB, Arizona Cardinals (9.6 percent owned)

Hampered by a shoulder injury earlier this season, Palmer has mostly been off the fantasy radar, but with his return and solid play against former team the Oakland Raiders, the Arizona Cardinals quarterback looks like waiver-wire gold again.

Not only did he pass for two touchdowns and over 250 yards for the third time this season, but he also has another favorable matchup in Week 8. The Philadelphia Eagles have allowed 257 yards per game and 13 touchdowns through just six games.

Brad Evans of Yahoo noted the success for Palmer this season:

Owners preparing for the loss of Colin Kaepernick in Week 8 or the plethora of quarterbacks out in Weeks 9 and 10 must look at Palmer. His value is high right now, and matchups against the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams don't look awful.

When he's on the field, Palmer has shined. Don't let him slip through your fingers if you need a promising backup.

Denard Robinson, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars (0.5 percent owned)

Fans in Ohio thought their nightmares of Shoelace were over, but he got one last laugh on Sunday. The former Michigan quarterback ravaged the Cleveland Browns defense as the Jacksonville Jaguars won their first game of the season.

Robinson rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown as the starter in place of Toby Gerhart. The second-year back spoke about his performance following the game, per ESPN.com:

"The last time I carried the ball 20 times I was in college," Robinson said. "It's a great feeling. We knew it was coming. We've just got to stack them and up and get back to work. Good to do it against an Ohio team."

Thanks to his numbers posted, he might have left Gerhart in the rearview mirror. His outstanding day not only left him as a potential starter moving forward but also left fantasy owners with a lead back on the waiver wire.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk put Robinson's day into perspective:

Suffice it to say, Robinson proved he can step up and help carry the Jaguars offense. Facing a matchup with the Miami Dolphins this weekend and favorable defenses later this season, Robinson looks like a great flex target the rest of the way.

Bryce Brown, RB, Buffalo Bills (1.3 percent owned)

Fantasy owners of C.J. Spiller or Fred Jackson are now left looking for a viable option in the backfield. While Anthony Dixon may have been the replacement on Sunday afternoon, the potential with Brown seems much better.

During a win over the Minnesota Vikings, both Spiller and Jackson went down with a collarbone and groin injury, respectively. Bleacher Report's Stephen Nelson and Will Carroll broke down the situation for the Buffalo Bills' backs:

For now, Dixon served as the replacement in the short term on Sunday, but if Brown is active and on the field, he should be the back to own at least until Jackson returns.

Bills coach Doug Marrone discussed Brown's status and his likely workload, per Buffalo's official Twitter account:

Along with the heightened role for the next few weeks, Brown might take over Spiller's spot for the remainder of the season. Though he doesn't provide the same speed, he is still just 23 years old and has 878 yards over the last two seasons.

During his career, Brown has three games with over 100 yards despite only getting 15 or more carries in the same amount of games. He'll get his chance to prove his worth and should be a good fantasy option moving forward.
