Eric Decker, Geno Smith's 2014 Fantasy Outlook After Percy Harvin Traded to Jets

Chris RolingOct 17, 2014

As Percy Harvin owners collectively smack their foreheads in disgust over the news the Seattle Seahawks shipped the explosive receiver to the New York Jets, Eric Decker and Geno Smith owners are grinning ear to ear with fantasy football aspirations rekindled.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports shattered the realm of fantasy football Friday with the report:

How it helps the 1-6 Jets turn things around is a valid question, but this is about fake football, with the Jets very suddenly a hot commodity in all leagues.

Smith has been a mixed bag for most of the season, as the Jets employ a run-first approach with Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson. The potential for fantasy super stardom is there, but mind-numbingly bad turnover issues continue to tank his value, hence why he is 4.4 percent owned:

Interestingly enough, veteran slot man Jeremy Kerley has been one of Smith's favorite targets over the course of his young career, but now the nod goes to the explosive Harvin, should he stay healthy and the coaching staff dial up creative ways to get him the ball, something the defending champs could not do.

Smith is suddenly a very viable QB2 as long as Harvin is healthy, and much of this has to do with the bump a suddenly surefire WR2 Decker has become.

Decker, when healthy, has been quite effective for his owners, although a severe lack of other weapons in the passing game has clearly hindered his production. He has three games in double digits this season, but it is a far cry from his six trips to double digits last season in Denver when he was the eighth-highest scorer at the position.

As Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports muses, Decker is clearly the biggest beneficiary of Harvin's arrival:

Decoy or not, defenses must respect the game-breaking ability to Harvin on each and every down, meaning less bodies to prevent Decker from continuing to be a go-to target to move the chains and in the red zone.

At the worst, Harvin rarely takes the field or the staff struggles to use him. At best, he is ridiculously inflating Smith's numbers off short slants and bubble plays by doing the bulk of the work after the catch.

Smith and Decker are set to be two of the hottest commodities, and for good reason with the potential detailed above. Grab Smith on the wire as a stash and buy low on Decker as a team with nothing to lose gets ready to get creative as it guns for the future.
