Why the Seahawks can cover the spread

Seattle looked mortal last week in its loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and sometimes a team just has to get out of town to refocus and find itself. The Seahawks are still 3-2 and visit a St. Louis team that continues to struggle with consistent play over a full 60 minutes.

The Rams look good sometimes but bad most of the time, which is exactly the type of opponent Seattle needs. Bettors can just look at the last road game the Seahawks played to see what they can expect here at St. Louis.

Seattle topped Washington 27-17 as a similar seven-point road favorite in Week 4 on Monday Night Football and can do the same thing against the Rams.

And the Seahawks usually rebound well from losses, according to the Odds Shark NFL database. The past 12 games ater a loss, Seattle covered the spread nine times (9-3 ATS).

Why the Rams can cover the spread

St. Louis can cover against the Seahawks simply by playing hard the whole game. The Rams have suffered from lapses at times that have given their opponents plenty of opportunities to beat them. For example, they gave up an 80-yard touchdown pass to the San Francisco 49ers at the end of the first half when they were leading 14-3 and ended up losing 31-17 on Monday night.

St. Louis blew another big lead against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, allowing them to come back from a 21-0 deficit and win 34-31. Then again, the Rams also rallied from a 31-7 deficit themselves in a 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles the following week, proving they know how to play well in stretches. The key obviously is doing it for four quarters as opposed to just one or two.

Smart pick

St. Louis might be able to put it together against a different opponent, but the Rams are catching the Seahawks at a bad time off a disappointing loss. Seattle is 3-1 against the spread in its last four road games against NFC West opponents and has also won and covered the spread the last three times following a straight-up loss.

In fact, the Seahawks have won those three games by an average of nearly 16 points. In addition, they are 7-3 ATS in their past 10 games as road favorites, showing that they take care of business when they’re supposed to away from home. Seattle wins this one by double digits.

Betting trends

  • Seattle is 16-2 SU in its last 18 games when playing St. Louis.
  • The total has gone over in 11 of St. Louis's last 16 games at home.
