Original Text
Just as it appeared the San Francisco 49ers would escape from St. Louis with no more injury troubles on Monday night, wide receiver Stevie Johnson was hurt while recovering the Rams' last-ditch onside kick.
According to Around The NFL, Johnson suffered a hip injury:
Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle provided an update after the game:
A fellow NFC West player in Arizona Cardinals safety Tony Jefferson felt St. Louis would have done well to kick it deep, which would have kept Johnson intact:
"Id kick it deep. Rams basically have two timeouts with the two min warning. Trust defense for three n out
— Tony Jefferson (@tonyjefferson1) October 14, 2014"
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report weighed in on Johnson's apparent ailment:
Johnson was connecting well with Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick, hauling in five receptions for 53 yards on six targets at the Edward Jones Dome.
Having already seen Patrick Willis and Jimmie Ward go down on defense in Week 6 and offensive guard Mike Iupati knocked out of action (h/t NFL.com's Chris Wesseling), San Francisco's depth is truly being tested everywhere.
It will be important for the Niners to try to keep the ball away from Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos when they travel to face them at Mile High in Week 7.
Doing so without a savvy veteran wideout in Johnson will make matters more difficult, and potentially missing Iupati's presence would impede the overall execution in both dimensions of San Francisco's offense.
