Report: Luke Wilson May Play Roger Goodell in Football Concussions Movie

Dan CarsonOct 13, 2014

Who would you cast to play Roger Goodell in a movie?

Kevin Costner? Kevin Spacey? A tall Pez dispenser filled with preloaded excuses?

It's difficult to say who could best capture the NFL commissioner's tepid persona on the big screen, but according to a report from The Wrap's Jeff Sneider (h/t For The Win's Chris Strauss), actor Luke Wilson is considering the role for an upcoming movie.

Citing "an individual familiar with the project," Sneider reports that Wilson is currently engaged in contract negotiations to portray Goodell in a movie about the NFL and its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in former players.

Sneider reports the movie is based on "Game Brain," a 2009 article by GQ's Jeanne Marie Laskas on Dr. Bennet Omalu and his research into CTE and its effects on former NFL players.

According to Sneider, the movie is being directed by Ridley Scott and will feature a cast including Will Smith, Alec Baldwin and Albert Brooks, among other stars.

How big a role will Goodell play in the movie? Strauss writes that it could be expanded due to the league's recent blunders.

"

Goodell plays a background role in the original story, although it will be interesting to see if his role would become more prominent in the film if they end up taking the script beyond 2009. Given the GQ piece’s indictment of the league’s response to Omalu’s findings, the character will likely be focused on portraying Goodell as an aloof corporate executive not wanting to hear the truth about the potential hazards of his business.

"

So does Wilson fit into this equation? Will the "Godfather" make a convincing commissioner? He did lock a guy in a dumpster that one time.

Playing Goodell doesn't seem like a deep dive for an actor.

Vanilla to a fault, the commissioner isn't a role you'll win an Oscar for. If Wilson can deliver uninteresting and vaguely disingenuous corporation-speak, he can handle this job.

Just practice pursing your lips and looking sad, Luke. You've got this.
