Antone Smith, Steven Jackson's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 6

Sean ODonnellOct 12, 2014

The Atlanta Falcons engaged in an aerial battle with the Chicago Bears in Week 6, leaving few carries available to running backs Antone Smith and Steven Jackson. While Jackson received the bulk of the reps out of the backfield, Smith continued to solidify himself as the more dynamic option.

Jackson rattled off a long run of 14 yards on the day, but that was his lone highlight. Through six games this season, his value has already been established. The veteran ball-carrier has only eclipsed the 50-yard mark twice, scored two touchdowns and received no more than 14 carries in that span.

ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure tweeted his thoughts on a big day for Jackson before the game:

As it turned out, even with Lance Briggs out of commission, the running back remained an afterthought in this pass-first offense. Jackson doesn't warrant much more consideration than a last-ditch option as a bye-week replacement. Despite his role as the team's top option out of the backfield, Jackson's value is extremely low and there's no reason for any fantasy owner to start him on a consistent basis.

Smith is quickly emerging as one of the league's most exciting players. Through six games this season, he's ripped off a scoring play of at least 38 yards in all but one contest. On Sunday, a catch and run of 41 yards in the third quarter yielded Smith's fifth touchdown of the season.

Here's a week-by-week look at the running back's explosive playmaking ability, via NFL:

Smith already warrants consideration as a flex play for his fantasy owners. Should head coach Mike Smith decide to force-feed this exciting ball-carrier with increased touches in the future, he could quickly become fantasy gold in standard and PPR formats.
