DeAndre Yedlin to Tottenham: Latest News on Transfer from Seattle Sounders

United States national team defender DeAndre Yedlin could see his switch to Tottenham Hotspur go through in January as the player looks to resolve passport issues.

ESPN reports that the Seattle Sounders full-back has spoken about his transfer to the Premier League and how he chose moving to Spurs over joining Roma:

A big deciding factor is my passport—I'm working on getting a Latvian passport. If that goes through, January is definitely very possible. It's either June or January. I always knew I had that sort of [Latvian] background. I never really paid attention to it, but it's become useful now and I'm going to take advantage of it.

I could have signed for Roma, but I just felt that England fits my playing style better and Tottenham was a good situation for me. I'm an attacking full-back. They have Kyle Walker and I'm excited to learn from him and learn from the other full-backs and coach Mauricio Pochettino, who's great with young players.

Yedlin has featured prominently for the Sounders in the past two seasons, playing 54 times in the regular season and participating in the play-offs, per MLSSoccer.com.

Kyle Walker's continual injury problems leave his own position under threat at White Hart Lane, and Yedlin could surprisingly see himself in the Tottenham starting line-up sooner rather than later.

MLS writer Dan Dickinson believes Yedlin's recent inclusion in the USMNT squad could help aid his move to Spurs and avoid potential work permit problems:

Tottenham have had a varying start to life under their new management, winning only two of their last six games, per WhoScored.com.

It is difficult to see where the young American fits in at Spurs right now as transition very much reigns supreme at present.

Yedlin is an exciting, progressive talent, but the strains of the Premier League could be too much for him immediately. Despite being a full international, the English top division is a different type of beast for a young, foreign player—especially a defender.

But if Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino decides to break Yedlin in gradually, he could have a rising star on his hands.

Yedlin was recently named the best young player in the MLS, per the Seattle Sounders' official website, and Spurs have done well to purchase him now before bigger teams come calling.

The player's game time will very much be initially decided by Walker's fitness, with the England international surely desperate to reclaim his regular starting spot. But nonetheless, Yedlin is a good signing for the north London outfit.
